Weekly Round Up

With the majority of the Rossendale Road Club’s ‘A’ team sidelined through illness or injury, it was left to the lesser lights of the club to fly the flag for Rossendale in last weekend’s cycling time trials in the North West region.

On Saturday afternoon, it was the North Lancs 10 mile championship at Garstang, incorporating Rossendale’s own championship. The conditions proved to be demanding. A strong Southerly wind benefited riders along the A6 to turn into the proverbial brick wall for the return leg to Garstang. Nevertheless, the overall winner David Parking posted a time approaching an average of almost 30 mph for the 10 miles. Derek Schofield was 34th overall to take the club trophy in a time of 24.54, with Chris Thomas 41st and 2nd club member in 25.56 and Craig Howarth with a time of 27.22.

On Sunday morning, a similar strong wind ‘welcomed’  riders to the 25 mile event hosted by the Lancashire Road Club, taking in 2 laps of the Winmarleigh – Cockerham Sands circuit. David Parkin repeated his success of the previous day, completing the 25 miles in a time of 55.45 min. Schofield posted a much slower time of 1.08.37 to finish 17th overall, with Helen Thomas  finishing as 4th lady with a praiseworthy time of 1.25.14 on a standard road bike in her first season of time trialling.

The club’s own evening 10 mile events continue on Tuesday evening at Hapton, and all are welcome to come and have a go. Specialist TT bikes are not necessary and riders with standard road bike are especially encouraged to test themselves and set a time.

Weekly evening social rides continue on Thursday, leaving Kay St at 6:15 pm, with 2 groups as  numbers dictate.
