More RRC Crit & TT Success

Mark Berry continues to excel for Rossendale Road Club in the closed circuit criterium racing series held at Tameside and, on Tuesday last, scored his second win of the season. In this race, Berry was ably supported by Craig Venske, who is progressing rapidly in all forms of cycle racing in the North West.

On Thursday evening at the Steve Burke centre in Barrowford, Berry couldn’t continue his winning ways and slipped to 7th in the British Cycling Category 1 & 2 race. But the Rossendale team finished in strength in the Cat 3 & 4 event with club secretary Tony Bowler in 5th, Matt Toman 11th, Iain Hazell 12th and Dave Haygarth 13th.

On the fast Time Trial course at Levens on Saturday evening, Hazell was the leading valley club rider, but even with a very good time of 22:55 for the 10 miles, only finished in 54th place from the 90 starters, won by Padiham’s Simon Wilson in an astonishing sub-18 minute time of 17:55. Rossendale’s Helen Thomas was very pleased to post her 1st sub-30 time for a 10 mile TT of 29:09.

In Cheshire, the weather turned wet and windy for Dukinfield CC’s 50 mile TT, and there were several non-finishers. The event was won by Derek Parkin of Velotik Racing with Rossendale’s Derek Schofield coming home 47th from the 71 starters in a time of 2:13:29.

And it was the improving Venske who took the win on Tuesday evening in the first round of this year’s Harry Law evening time trials series. The series continues next Tuesday at Hapton, with all riders welcome, road and TT bikes.
