Club News

Rossendale cyclists continue to fly the club’s colours in a variety of disciplines across the North West cycling competitions.

On Tuesday evening, Mark Berry continued to show good form in the Tameside Criterium road racing series with a 5th place in the British Cycling Cat 2/3/4 race. This week he was ably supported by club secretary Tony Bowler, who finished in a strong 11th place, clearly benefitting from his winter’s track league success.

On the more traditional Time Trial circuit, Iain Hazell showed his previous week’s showing on the fast Levens 10 mile course was no fluke, improving to a finish time of 22:38. And Helen Thomas scored another PB, taking off more than a minute to a very good 28:07. The event was won by Thomas Brazier of HUUB Wattshop in 18:47 with Craig Venske as the best Rossendale club rider in 29th spot with an outstanding sub-21 minute time of 20:59. There was also a welcome return to racing for Craig Howarth, who posted a creditable time of 25:46.

Several Rossendale riders made the journey South on Saturday afternoon for the 10 mile TT event at Byley in Cheshire. It was Alex Royle taking the win in 20:33 with best Rossendale rider Derek Schofield taking 27th place in 25:28. Howard Leach posted a time of 27:27, with his father and valley cycling legend John coming home in 30:20, both commendable times on standard road bikes.

The club’s mid-week TT series continues next Tuesday with the Festival of Britain event around the Bowland-by-Bowland circuit. All riders welcome with sign-on from 6:30pm at the Forest Becks layby.
