The weekend saw two major cycling events taking place locally, both with plenty of involvement from Rossendale based riders. For road riders, it was the Rake Hill Climb at Ramsbottom and there was another bumper entry for this event. In the top quality field, Crawshawbooth’s Max Hereward couldn’t repeat his previous week’s win, but did well to finish in the top 10 and 1st Junior with a time of 2:44.8 minutes for this lung-busting climb. Overall, it was Kieran Wynne-Cattonach of the sponsored Team LGP who took the win in 2:26.0. Luke Dabbs was the 1st Rossendale RC member in 38th, getting revenge from the previous week over Iain Hazell, 43rd in 3:39.4. Eve Davies-Heywood finished in 64th overall in 4:34.2, and RRC member Helen Thomas was pleased to achieve her PB under 6 minutes in 69th position with a time of 5:54.7m.

Off-road, the 3rd round of this year’s North west cyclo-cross series was held at Towneley Park, and Cycle Sport Pendle had plotted an excellent course providing riders with everything that CX can offer – fast flowing sections, technical sections through the trees, adverse cambers and, of course, MUD! Although the recent dry and warm weather didn’t provide the worst that Towneley Park can offer.

The youth’s event was first up and Elsie Haygarth was best local rider coming in 17th overall and 5th Lady. Joey Holt and Riley Holt both finished well in just their 2nd outing in 25th and 31st placings.

In the men’s V50 event Phil Simcock of the Ramsbottom-based JMC club rode a fantastic race to take 2nd place, despite a major collision with V60 Derek Schofield which brought both riders to a big fall. Dave Haygarth took another top 10 place with 7th, Mick Taylor improved to 26th and Paul Warrener slipped to 51st, suffering a nasty injury when he was brought down.

In the V60 class, Derek Schofield improved to 7th place despite his fall, and Graham Wright missed out on the V70 award in 14th.

The V40 class was won by well-known fell runner Rob Jebb. Ashley Holt did well in his return to this sport, just nipping Rick Solman to 33rd place, with Ben Molnar taking 44th. Matt Toman was the only local finisher in the Senior event, but continues to improve, taking 25th spot.

The action this coming weekend takes the 4th round of the CX series to Beacon Park, near Wigan.
