Autumn weather brings on the start of the Hill Climb and Cyclo-Cross events for competitive cyclists and it was the 2nd round of the North West CX series that took place on Sunday at South Park, Macclesfield. And there was plenty of Rossendale interest.
With a warm day and drying wind, the courses were without any major technical issues and races were fast and furious.
In the junior races it was the debut for Riley Holt and Charlie Holt in the U16 and U10 races and they both did well to finish amongst the field and are already looking forward to their next event. Experienced Elsie Haygarth finished 6th in U16 girl’s event and was disappointed but is now in an upper age group and will mature quickly.
In the senior men’s event, Matt Toman has already shown that maturity and rode a great race to finish 23rd out of the 59 starters.
The highly competitive men’s V50 event was won by David Alexandar of the Zepnat-Lazer team, with Helmshore’s Dave Haygarth, possibly feeling the effects of his previous race in the Yorkshire 3 Peaks, in 5th. Mick Taylor was 39th and Paul Warrener 53rd.
In the joint V60/70 event, Derek Schofield was off the pace of the leaders in his first race of the season in 8th place overall, with Graham Wright continuing to dominate the V70 class with 1st place, and 17th overall. First time rider Pete Browning pipped Adrian Watts to 22nd spot.
The action turns to the hill climbers this Saturday, with a bumper entry of 37 riders attacking the ascent of Woodplumpton Road through Burnley Golf Club. The action starts at 10am and spectators are welcome to view this gruelling effort over just a few minutes of racing.
