Round up of local cycling from the last week:
There has been plenty of competitive cycling to keep Rossendale’s cyclists busy during the last week, and possibly the best result was the victory of Helmshore’s Elsie Haygarth in the U14 North of England MTB Championships. A strong contender in the past winter’s North West cyclo-cross season, Elsie is also an accomplished runner with Rossendale Harriers and on Sunday showed her class in another off-road discipline by taking this win at the Parkwood Centre in Bradford.
At the other end of the age scale, Rossendale Road Club’s John Leach and Derek Schofield raced in Saturday’s Manchester & District 25 mile time trial on the Byley – Cranage circuit in Cheshire. Schofield edged into 39th place with a time of 1:06:05 and John Leach finished in 53rd with a respectable 1:15:30.
On Tuesday evening, 9 riders braved the torrential rain and gusty side winds in the 3rd round of the Rossendale’s club’s 10 mile TT series, and it was Richie Watts who was the leading local rider, 2nd overall in his first event of the year in a time of 29.07 min. Paul Warrener was just under 30 secs back, in 3rd overall and Helen Thomas scored another PB with 33.44. The unfortunate16 year old Maxwell Hereward didn’t finish when his handlebars came adrift and Luke Dabbs stopped with a puncture.
The series continues next Tuesday at Hapton, all welcome with sign-on from 6:30pm.
