1.     Opening remarks – Chairperson

It has been a good year for the club, 5 open events, 2 time trials, I mtb event, 1 cx event and a hill climb, for a small club we punch above our weight, my personal thanks to all who get involved with making these a success. They are all well received by the competitors and officials alike.

We ran over 20 club events, some more successful than others, which are up for discussion later.

Thanks to Damian again for organising the Sunday rides , these could be better attended, if anyone has any ideas we can discuss them at the end of the meeting.

The press results have been good again this year thanks to Derek Schofield, but he can only report on what we as members tell him.

Thanks to Mike O’Shea for administering the SPOCO league and also collating the Harry Law series

Minutes of Latest Club meeting

Rossendale Road Club meeting 26/9/16

Attendance: Luke Dabbs, Richie Watts, Damian Ludlow, Adrian Watts, Will Brown, Lisa Greenwood

Apologies: Mick and Tracey Taylor, Paul Warrener, Linda Felton, Derek Schofield, Chris Thomas, Si Ollerenshaw

Training rides: Chris Thomas asked about being able to vary the Thursday evening rides to include other areas, it was discussed and the feeling was that the system worked well and there is scope to vary the rides so long as the initial direction is kept to so that riders know where to join in if late. If there are other rides that could be fitted into the schedule are wanted then we can insert them into the range of rides.

Tuesday training: We would like to formalise Tuesday evening rides September to May so we are seeking ideas.

Kit: There is the potential for another manufacturer for the kit and this will hopefully be on show at the October meeting, there is website that can be accessed to view the offer.

CX at Landgate; this was a success and the help that was given on both the Saturday and Sunday was greatly appreciated by Richie and Adrian. The event earnt the club over £100. There has been one complaint this year about the parking which we will respond to in the near future.

Club Events: The two events we run in the Ribble Valley have failed to attract enough interest to make them worthwhile to put on and the meeting felt it was time to stop them, no decision has been made to give other members the chance to come to the October meeting with other ideas.

Harry Law 10’s: After the success of the road bike only event on the last event in August it was suggested that we try running two competitions in one next year and splitting the results as road bike and TT bikes when published.

Hill Climbs: A suggestion was made at the Roadmans Hill climb that we could try another one during season.

Presentation: This years presentation will be on Saturday 19th November at Sykeside as in previous years. Please return all trophies to Adrian ASAP.

Open Events: Next year we are only committed to two time trials, Spoco on 25th February and Hill Climb 7th October.

The AGM will be held at the November meeting 27/11/16.

Next meeting 31st October at the Jolly Sailor at 8pm.

Chris Thomas PB Second Week Running

For the second week in succession, Chris Thomas of Edenfield, riding for the Rossendale Road Club, broke his PB for a 10 mile time trial. At The Lancashire RC’s event at Garstang on Saturday, Thomas finished in a time of 24:42 min, average speed 24.29 mph, to take 35th spot in the full field of riders. It was success all round for the valley club with Paul Warrener and Linda Felton taking the tandem award in 27:24 and Lisa Greenwood in the Ladies race with 28:43. Derek Schofield completed the valley team with a time of 23:57 to take 28th spot overall.

Warrener continued his good form on Tuesday to be top local rider in the evening Harry Law TT series, in second spot being North Lancs’ Paul Taylor, and just 3 seconds in front of Andy Horner of Bury Clarion. Roy Flanagan was 5th in 26:22 with Luke Dabbs a further 30 seconds back in 6th. The action continues at Hapton next Tuesday with sign on from 6:30 pm, all are welcome to come and give time trialling a go. The club events are open to novices and newcomers, ordinary road bikes are fully suitable and no club membership is necessary.

200 Mile Bike ride

200 Mile Bike ride – Sunday 29th May 2016
Not only a personal challenge but a way of raising money for a charity raising money to buy a Neonatal ICU incubator for Pennine Acute Hospitals Charity, “Life and Comfort”
I am asking all riders to give a voluntary £20 donation to the charity and also to share this page with friends so they can sponsor you.
The route is shown on the Map, basically we will cycle to the coast and back, but the long way, a tcx file is available.
We are also looking for somebody to possibly support the ride by driving the route carrying spares and nutrition, any volunteers to contact Damian, Adrian or myself.
The more riders we have the easier it will be to complete, so please do join us, it is open to anybody, not just RRC riders.
It will start at 6 am from Kay Street car park in Rawtenstall.
Please email Richie on if you want any more information, and if you are going to ride, please let me know as well.

Macclesfield Supacross 2015

The penultimate round of the 2015/16 North West CX series took place at Macclesfield during the festive break, and Rossendale riders were well represented. The course was surprisingly dry and this made for plenty of fast open racing. Cyclo-cross really is a family sport, catering for all ages and abilities, and Matt Toman was first to show, finishing in a sound mid-table 19th in the Youths U16 event. The go-cross event followed and Elsie Haygarth had a great ride to win the U8 girls class in the mixed race. Elsie is now leading the U8 girls series and, with just one round remaining, is on course to take the overall series.

Her father, Dave Haygarth, is leading the V40 class and did well to finish 6th in a very competitive combined Vets and Womens race, won by ex-National champion Nick Craig. Further down the field, Derek Schofield finished 60th and first V60, Richie Watts 71st and Mike O’Shea 75th. Adrian Watts recovered well from a fall and mechanical problem to finish 101st, just in front of Paul Warrener (103rd) and Graham Wright who took the V65 win in 128th overall.

There is now a 2 week break in racing prior to the final round at Beacon Fell, Upholland on Sunday 24 January.

Stadt Moers CX Round 11 NWCCA

The latest round of the North west cyclo-cross series took place at Stadt Moers, St Helens, on Sunday and the clear skies and drying course were welcomed by riders, after the recent event mudbaths. First up was the youths event and Maisy Vasic returned to winning ways with a fine result in the girls U14 class. Matt Toman was 7th in the U16 boys and Adam Nelson, sporting his Cycle Sport Pendle jersey, just behind in 8th.

Onto the Vets/Womens race and present leader of the series, Dave Haygarth of Helmshore, tried to keep on the tail of Tim Gould, ex National trophy winner, but Gould eventually pulled away with Dan Alexander coming through to take second, leaving Haygarth taking the last place on the podium. Further down the field, Richie Watts suffered another mechanical problem, this time forcing his retirement. Carl Nelson was riding strongly, taking 47th spot at the finish. Derek Schofield was hanging onto his tail and looking to take the V60 award, but a slipped chain and dislodged rear wheel saw him drop off the pace, just managing to beat Adrian Watts to the finish line, Watts riding the whole course without any dismounts. Paul Warrener completed the RRC team in 82nd, just behind Mike O’Shea.

Ian Hazell, who is just learning the ropes in this branch of the sport finished 45th in the senior race and will surely make his mark in the future.
