Riders from Rossendale finished the season in style at the final round of the North West cyclo-cross series at Buile Hill Park, Salford, at the weekend by taking three 1st places in their age categories and four top ten placings.
The course set by Salford Cycling Club was praised by all competitors and was fast and free flowing, punctuated by several greasy off-cambers needing special care.
Elsie Haygarth posted another 2nd place in the U12 girls event, mirrored by Katie Taylor in the open Women’s event. Katie was also 1st Junior Woman which cemented her overall series victory in this class.
In the V50 event, Tony Bowler finished in a fine 9th place, in his first season of cyclo-cross, with Derek Schofield in 19th, also taking the 1st V60 award. In the same race, Phil Warner took 57th and 1st V70. Carl Nelson was 32nd with Roy Flanagan 38th, despite riding with a broken finger. These were followed by a close grouping of Richie Watts in 50th, Graham Wright 59th and Paul Warrener 61st.
Dave Haygarth had another top ten finish in the V40 event, with Matt Toman finishing the season with a strong finish of 2nd U23 and 29th overall in the final event of the day for Senior Men.
It has proved to be a great season for the Rossendale club with over a dozen riders flying the colours, and it is hoped to expand on this for 2020/21 and hopefully a coaching session will be held in the summer for anyone keen to try this branch of cycling. Riders are now looking forward to the road season, with a short break till the opening Time Trial event to be hosted by our club, at Bolton by Bowland on Saturday 22nd February.
