The 25th running of the World Masters Track Cycling championships was held recently at the Manchester Velodrome. It was a jubilant Ken Whitehead of Haslingden who was a member of the Manchester ‘A’ team, representing Great Britain, to take the Gold medal in the team pursuit for the Male 65-69 age group, retaining their title from 2018 in Los Angeles. This was Ken’s first ride in the World Championships, having been brought in to strengthen the 4 man squad to defend their title.
Derek Schofield of RRC was also taking part in these championships for the first time, in the Manchester ‘B’ team also representing Great Britain, but was disappointed when the team failed to qualify for the bronze medal final by 8 seconds, finishing their 4 km ride in a time of 5:24:35.
Derek also competed in the points race and although not getting in the medals he enjoyed his first taste of competition at this level and is looking forward to competing again next time.
